Sunway Group commemorated the start of construction works for the RM 300 million (gross development cost), 180-bed Sunway Medical Centre, Seberang Jaya. Space for a second phase of expansion has already been allocated, bringing total gross development cost up to RM 400 million and an increase in bed capacity to 350.
The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by the Penang chief minister, Chow Kon Yew accompanied by members of the Penang Executive Council as well as Sunway Group founder and chairman, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO.
The medical centre is Sunway Group’s Healthcare Division’s maiden foray into Penang and is expected to be completed by Q4 2020.
The medical centre is part of the expansion of Sunway City Seberang Jaya which currently includes the 202-room Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya, three phases of commercial developments, a business park and the 1 million sq ft Sunway Carnival Mall (upon completion of expansion by Q4 2020; current NLA 500,000 sq ft in operation).
Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO said, “Penang is growing at a steady rate of approximately 1.5% in population and 5.5% in GDP annually. In tandem, Seberang Perai is also growing rapidly as one of the most populated districts on the mainland with its population estimated to surpass 1.1 million in 2020.”

Sunway Medical Centre, Seberang Jaya is part of Sunway Group’s Healthcare Division’s expansion plans throughout Malaysia. Including Sunway Medical Centre Seberang Jaya, the plans will see Sunway Group invest an estimated RM 1 billion to build new hospitals in its various integrated townships of Sunway Velocity (Klang Valley); Sunway Damansara (Klang Valley); Sunway City Ipoh (Ipoh); and Sunway Iskandar (Johor).
SUNWAY MEDICAL SEBERANG JAYA TO OFFER THE BEST OF HEALTHCARE
Located in mainland Penang, Sunway Medical Centre Seberang Jaya will seek to deliver similar standards of the award-winning healthcare that Sunway Medical Centre in Sunway City is known for.
Once it is open, more than 600 healthcare and hospitality professionals including nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and psychologists will work to deliver excellent patient care within the estabilshment.
At its core, there will be 60 medical specialists practicing in the hospital. These are experienced and qualified doctors who have receiving training in countries known for advanced healthcare standards and technologies such as the UK, Australia, the US and Singapore.
The centre will have a capacity of 180 beds on opening, including a six-bedded intensive care unit. The Centre will also include six operating theatres which are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art monitoring and treatment systems that can handle major team-based surgeries involving the heart, brain and lungs.
Sunway Medical Centre Seberang Jaya’s core specialities will include Neurology and Neurosurgery, Clinical and Medical Oncology, Orthopaedic and Cardiac and Vascular. These services will be complemented with the latest medical innovations. Some of the state-of-the-art medical equipment includes the Linear Accelerator and PET/CT scanner, which will form part of its comprehensive Cancer Centre.
Other specialised services to be offered in the hospital includes Gastroenterology & Hepatobiliary, Ear, Nose & Throat, Eye, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatric, Internal Medicine, Accident & Emergency and other medical and surgical disciplines.
Its strategic location within the integrated township of Sunway City Seberang Jaya will ensure patients and their families have easy access to amenities including the Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya, Sunway Carnival Mall and various amenities within its vicinity.
Its prime location will also enable Sunway to promote the medical centre which is for medical tourism, to provide quality medical care to foreign and travelling patients as well as comfort and convenience.
Sunway Group’s Healthcare Division is also poised to elevate the level of healthcare in Malaysia with its recent collaboration with University of Cambridge (UK), as the latter set up the first regional clinical research site in Sunway Medical Centre. Other notable affiliations include Royal Papworth Hospital – a top notch heart and lung transplant hospital in Cambridge (UK), and Harvard Medical School (US), for clinical service development, training and education for Sunway’s doctors and staff.
